History of the Devotion
The Carmelites trace their devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel back to the 13th century when they were granted permission to settle on Mount Carmel in northern Israel. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock, the Prior General of the Carmelites, in 1251, giving him the brown scapular and promising special protection to those who wore it.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is not only the patroness of the Carmelite Order but also of sailors, firefighters, and expectant mothers.
