West Yorkshire Police said they received calls from the girl's family in the early hours of Monday 7 August reporting concerns for welfare.

The girl was arrested on suspicion of a homophobic public order offence, but police have now said she will face no further action.

The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many people questioning the police's decision to arrest the girl.

In a statement, West Yorkshire Police said: "At 12.12am on Monday 7 August, police received a call from a family member of a 16-year-old girl who was concerned about her welfare as she had made a comment about an officer and had become upset.

"Officers attended the address as part of their duty to respond to reports of concern for welfare. During the incident, the girl made a number of comments to officers, including one homophobic slur.

"The girl was arrested on suspicion of a homophobic public order offence. She was later released without charge and no further action will be taken."
