FC Glentoran deny Newry City AFC a famous victory

Glentoran held on to clinch a 2-1 win over Newry City AFC on Saturday, in an outstanding NIFL Premiership contest at the Showgrounds.

The Glens took the lead in the 28th minute when Conor McMenamin fired home from close range. The hosts levelled on the hour mark through Daniel Hughes' penalty, but substitute Dale Gorman grabbed what proved to be the winner nine minutes from time.

Newry City AFC made a strong start to the game and came close to taking the lead in the 14th minute. A swift counter-attack from the hosts saw Ciaran Murphy slip in Hughes, but the striker's effort was well saved by Glentoran goalkeeper Aaron McCarey.

The Glens began to assert themselves as the half wore on, and they eventually took the lead in the 28th minute. McMenamin collected the ball on the left-hand side of the Newry City AFC area and cut inside before firing a low shot into the bottom corner.

Newry City AFC continued to press for an equaliser, and they were unlucky not to level just before the break. A deep cross from Hughes was met by O'Neill, but the defender's header crashed against the crossbar.

The hosts continued to press after the break, and they were finally rewarded for their efforts on the hour mark. Referee Raymond Crangle pointed to the spot after McMenamin was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area. Hughes stepped up and sent McCarey the wrong way from 12 yards.

Glentoran responded well to conceding, and they regained the lead nine minutes from time. Northern Ireland international Gorman met a cross from the left and headed home from close range.

Newry City AFC pushed for a late equaliser, but the Glens held on to secure all three points.
